EFFECTS OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE ON DYNAMIC MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETE TEST SPECIMENS
AN INVESTIGATION OF CONCRETES MADE WITH VARIOUS BRANDS OF NORMAL, WHITE AND HIGH-EARLY-STRENGTH PORTLAND CEMENTS, CURED IN VARIOUS WAYS, OVER PERIODS UP TO 635 DAYS, WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE GAIN IN DYNAMIC MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, E, WITH TIME AND TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE ADMIXTURES ON THAT MODULUS. IT WA FOUND THAT DYNAMIC E CAN BE DETERMINED WITH GOOD REPRODUCIBILITY WITH THE TYPE OF SPECIMEN USED, AS EARLY AS 24 HR. AFTER CASTING. FOR MOST OF THE CONCRETES CALCIUM CHLORIDE MARKEDLY INCREASED THE DYNAMIC E AT EARLY AGES BUT NOT AS MUCH AS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS AT CORRESPONDING AGES WERE INCREASED BY CALCIUM CHLORIDE IN THE TESTS REPORTED BY RAPPP IN 1934. THE DYNAMIC E FOR CONCRETES CONTAINING CALCIUM CHLORIDE GENERALLY REMAINED HIGHER THAN THOSE OF REFERENCE CONCRETES TO THE END OF EACH TEST SERIES. CHANGES IN MOISTURE CONTENT OF CONCRETE MARKEDLY AFFECT THE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF ELASTICITY. COMPARISONS BETWEEN CONCRETES OF DIFFERENT MOISTURE CONTENTS ON A BASIS OF VALUES OF DYNAMIC MODULI MAY THEREFORE BE MISLEADING. /AUTHOR/
