SODIUM SILICATE-REVIEW OF RECENT INVESTIGATIONS

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS WERE OBTAINED ON PAVEMENT SECTIONS CURED WITH WET EARTH, PONDING, CALCIUM CHLORIDE ADMIXTURE AND SODIUM SILICATE SURFACE APPLICATION. COMPARISONS ARE MADE OF THE PONDING AND SODIUM SILICATE METHODS. THE CORES CURED BY PONDING WERE MORE UNIFORM, BUT BOTH SHOWED UNIFORM CHARACTERISTICS WITHIN PRACTICAL LIMITS. AN OPINION FROM ONE SOURCE WAS THAT SODIUM SILICATE (BANME 36 TO 37 DEG) APPLIED EVENLY OVER THE SURFACE OF THE PAVEMENT AFTER REMOVAL OF THE BURLAP AT THE RATE OF ONE POUND PER SQUARE YARD WAS COMPARATIVELY AS EFFECTIVE A CURING AGENT AS CALCIUM CHLORIDE SURFACE APPLICATION, EARTH AND WATER, AND STRAW AND WATER. INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE AMOUNT OF MIXING WATER RETAINED IN CONCRETE DURING THE EARLY CURING PERIOD IS AN IMPORTANT INDEX OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CURING METHODS.
