WATER GAIN AND ITS EFFECTS ON CONCRETE
THE EXISTENCE OF WATER GAIN IS DUE TO THE MIGRATION OF WATER WHICH OCCURS WITHIN FRESH CONCRETE. IT CAN HAVE FAR- REACHING EFFECTS ON THE PROPERTIES OF ALL NORMAL CONCRETES AND IS A PHENOMENON WHICH HAS BEEN TOO OFTEN IGNORED. THE PRESENCE OF WATER GAIN IS DETRIMENTAL TO BOTH THE STRENGTH AND THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE. RESULTS HAVE SHOWN THAT INCREASING THE RATIO OF THE SURFACE AREA OF SOLIDS TO THE WATER IN A MIX REDUCES THE ANISOTROPIC EFFECT AND THEREFORE THE WATER GAIN. THIS ARTICLE SERVES AS AN INTRODUCTION TO "THE EFFECT OF WATER GAIN ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF CONCRETE IN TENSION, TORSION AND COMPRESSION," A TECHNICAL PAPER JUST PUBLISHED BY THE CONCRETE SOCIETY.
