ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF RECTANGULAR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE COLUMNS UNDER CONCENTRIC AND ECCENTRIC LOADINGS

THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST PHASE OF A RESEARCH PROGRAM CONCERNED WITH PRESTRESSED CONCRETE UNDER COMBINED AXIAL COMPRESSION AND BENDING ARE PRESENTED. ELEVEN RECTANGULAR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE COLUMNS, ALL WITH HINGED SUPPORTS, WERE TESTED TO FAILURE UNDER EITHER CONCENTRIC OR ECCENTRIC LOADING. ALL COLUMNS WERE 5 5/8X5 5/8 IN., PRESTRESSED WITH FOUR 1/4 IN. STRANDS, EACH INITIALLY TENSIONED TO 6300 LB. THE COLUMNS WERE CAST WITH CONCRETE FROM THE SAME BATCH. THE VARIABLES WERE THE SLENDERNESS RATIO AND THE ECCENTRICITY RATIO. FOR EACH LOAD INCREMENT ON THE COLUMN, DEFLECTIONS AND STRAINS WERE MEASURED EXCEPT FOR THE FINAL LOAD INCREMENT JUST BEFORE FAILURE. THE TEST RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE PREDICTIONS BY AN ANALYTICAL SOLUTION AND A SIMPLIFIED DESIGN METHOD. THE RESULTS COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH BOTH SOLUTIONS. A DISCUSSION OF THE TEST RESULTS IS PRESENTED ALONG WITH SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE IN FUTURE STUDIES. /AUTHOR/
