THE REVERSIBLE AND IRREVERSIBLE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF HARDENED PORTLAND CEMENT AND TRICALCIUM SILICATE PASTES
DRYING SHRINKAGE EXPERIMENTS USING THIN SLABS OF HARDENED PORTLAND CEMENT, ALITE, AND TRICALCIUM SILICATE PASTES ARE DESCRIBED. DRYING PRODUCES BOTH REVERSIBLE AND IRREVERSIBLE EFFECTS IN SKRINKAGES AND IN WATER LOSSES. AFTER SUFFICIENT DRYING THE PASTES BECOME STABILIZED, I.E., THE SUBSEQUENT SWELLING AND SHRINKAGE ARE REVERSIBLE. THE REVERSIBLE SHRINKAGE IS INDEPENDENT OF POROSITY, BUT THE IRREVERSIBLE SHRINKAGE IS DEPENDENT UPON POROSITY. THE EFFECTS OF PROLONGED DRYING AND PROLONGED MOIST CURING ON SHRINKAGE ARE DISCUSSED. INTERPRETATIONS IN TERMS OF CHANGES OF STRUCTURE OF THE PASTE ARE SUGGESTED. /PCA/
