CORROSION OF EMBEDDED MATERIAL OTHER THAN REINFORCING STEEL
A DISCUSSION IS PRESENTED OF THE BEHAVIOR OF ALUMINUM, LEAD, COPPER AND COPPER ALLOYS, ZINC, PLASTICS, WOOD, AND GLASS WHEN EMBEDDED IN CONCRETE. SEVERAL INSTANCES OF SPALLING OF CONCRETE IN WHICH ALUMINUM CONDUIT WAS EMBEDDED ARE INDICATED. LABORATORY TESTS INDICATE THAT CORROSION OF ALUMINUM IS ACCELERATED BY ADDITIONS OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE, AND GREATLY ACCELERATED IF THE ALUMINUM IS CONNECTED METALLICALLY TO REINFORCING STEEL IN THE PRESENCE OF THE CHLORIDE. UNDER CERTAIN LIMITED CONDITIONS EACH OF THE OTHER MATERIALS MENTIONED MAY BE ATTACKED, AND MAY CAUSE DETERIORATION OF THE CONCRETE. /PCA/
