A RAPID METHOD FOR STUDYING CORROSION INHIBITION OF STEEL IN CONCRETE

A RAPID METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR STUDYING THE ACTION OF INHIBITIORS ON CORROSION OF STEEL EMBEDDED IN CONCRETE CONTAINING CALCIUM CHLORIDE. INHIBITORS WERE EVALUATED BY MEASURING THE ANODIC POLARIZATION BEHAVIOR OF THE STEEL. CORROSION WAS INHIBITED IN CONCRETE CONTAINING 2 PERCENT CALCIUM CHLORIDE BY ADDITION OF 1 TO 2 PERCENT SODIUM NITRITE OR 2 TO 4 PERCENT POTASSIUM CHROMATE. ALSO, 6 TO 8 PERCENT SODIUM BENZOATE INHIBITED CORROSION IN CONCRETE CONTAINING 1.6 PERCENT SODIUM CHLORIDE. THE PRESENT METHOD IS IN AGREEMENT WITH LABORATORY AND FIELD FINDINGS CONCERN- ING CORROSION OF STEEL IN CONCRETE WITH AND WITHOUT CALCUIM CHLORIDE, BUT THERE IS VERY LITTLE INFORMATION FROM EXPOSURE TEST IN WHICH INHIBITORS WERE ADDED TO THE CONCRETE. /PCA/
