DETERMINING THE WATER ABSORPTION OF COARSE LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES FOR CONCRETE
THE WATER ABSORPTION PROPETIES OF A GROUP OF 15 LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES WERE STUDIED. THE WORK CONFIRMED THAT THE LARGE, SURFACE-EXPOSED PORES OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFICULTIES IN OBTAINING RELIABLE DATA ON WATER ABSORPTION OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE. THESE LARGE PORES MAY BE PARTIALLY FILLED BY CEMENT PASTE AND OTHER FINE MATERIAL DURING MIXING OF CONCRETE, AND PORE INTERIORS MAY BE PARTIALLY DRAINED OF WATER DURING "SURFACE-DRYING" PROCESSES. A SPECIAL LABORATORY TECHNIQUE FOR DETERMINING THE ACCURACY OF VARIOUS SURFACE-DRYING METHODS IS DISCUSSED. THIS TECHNIQUE INDICATES THAT AN APPROPRIATE TOWELING PROCEDURE CAN "SURFACE DRY" THE MAJORITY OF LIGHTWEIGHT COARSE AGGREGATES TO A CONDITION WHERE THE AGGREGATES WILL NEITHER CONTRIBUTE WATER TO, NOR ABSORB WATER FROM, A CONCRETE MIX. /PCA/
