PREVENTION OF FROST DAMAGE TO GREEN CONCRETE
IF THERE IS NO EXCHANGE OF WATER BETWEEN A BODY OF GREEN CONCRETE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, AUTOGENOUS DESICCATED WILL MAKE THE CEMENT PASTE IMMUNE TO DAMAGE BY FREEZING AFTER THE TIME WHEN THE SATURATION COEFFICIENT OF THE CAPILLARY SPACES DROPS BELOW A CERTAIN VALUE. DATA NOW AVAILABLE INDICATE THE PERMISSIBLE UPPER LIMIT OF SATURATION TO BE ABOUT 97 PERCENT, WHICH DEGREE OF DESICCATION IS REACHED WHEN THE MATURITY FACTOR IS 0.53 W/C. FOR CURING AT A GIVEN TEMPERATURE, THE NECESSARY PREHARDENING TIME CAN BE EXPRESSED AS A FUNCTION OF TIME AND WATER-CEMENT RATIO. THE RELATIVE LENGTHS OF THE NECESSARY PREHARDENING TIME CAN BE CALCULATED FROM AN ADAPTATION OF THE ARRHENIUS EQUATION. /PCA/
