THE NEW BEAM FURNACE AT PCA AND SOME EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM ITS USE

THE PRINCIPAL FEATURES AND CONSTRUCTION DETAILS OF THE FIRST MAJOR TESTING UNIT INSTALLED, A 40-FT BEAM FURNACE, ARE DESCRIBED. OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCES WITH THE FURNACE AND METHODS USED FOR RESOLVING QUESTIONS OF TESTING PROCEDURE NOT ANSWERED BY ASTM E 119 ARE DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE LOCATION OF THERMOCOUPLES TO INDICATE FURNACE TEMPERATURES, VARIATION OF TEMPERATURE WITHIN THE FURNACE, HEATING CONTROL THROUGH PROPER BALANCE OF AIR TO MULTIPLE BURNER INSTALLATION, ARTICULATION OF HYDRAULIC LOADING CYLINDERS, SPECIAL NONCOMBUSTIBLE HYDRAULIC FLUID, AND THE PROBLEM OF CLOSING THE TOP OF THE FURNACE. /PCA/
