CURRENT KNOWLEDGE IS SUMMARIZED OF THE PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY OF CEMENT AND IS BASED IN LARGE PART ON PCA RESEARCH BULLETIN 22 AND ON SUBSEQUENT WORKS OF POWERS AND HIS CO-WORKERS. IT DISCUSSES THE COMPOSITION AND VARIOUS TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENT. UNDER THE HEADING "CEMENT-WATER SYSTEM," WATER ADSORPTION AND SURFACE AREA OF THE HARDENED CEMENT PASTE AS WELL AS ITS POROSITY AND CAPILLARY ADSORPTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE SECTION "PHYSICAL PROPERTIES IN RELATION TO CHEMISTRY AND STRUCTURE" INDICATES THAT STRENGTH OF CONCRETE IS RELATED TO THE STRENGTH OF THE HARDENED PASTE AND, IN TURN, TO ITS POSOSITY. VARIOUS MECHANISMS OF DETERIORATION OF CONCRETE BY CHEMICAL FACTORS, BY MOISTURE AND TEMPERATURE CHANGES, AND BY FROST ACTION ARE DISCUSSED.
