CONCRETE AGGREGATES --CHEMICAL REACTIONS
THE PAPER REVIEWS METHODS OF TESTS FOR AGGREGATES TO DETERMINE THEIR POTENTIALITIES OF PRODUCING DELETERIOUS CHEMICAL REACTIONS IN CONCRETE. THESE INCLUDE: THE MORTAR BAR (ASTM C 227), PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION ASTM C 295), CHEMICAL TESTS (ASTM C 289), POTENTIAL VOLUME CHANGE METHOD OF CONROW AND THAT OF ASTM C 342, WETTING AND DRYING TESTS, AND THE MASON JAR TEST. SOME OF THESE TESTS CAN BE USED ALSO FOR THE STUDY OF REACTIVE SILICEOUS ADMIXTURES OR OTHER INHIBITORS WHICH MAY REDUCE OR INHIBIT EXPANSION. SOME OF THE MOST RELIABLE METHODS ARE TOO TIME-CONSUMING, WHILE THE MORE RAPID METHODS SERVE ONLY TO REVEAL THE PRESENCE OF REACTIVE CONSTITUENTS IN THE AGGREGATE. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IS NEEDED. /PCA/
