HARDENED CONCRETE -- PORE STRUCTURE

THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE, SUCH AS STRENGTH, DURABILITY, SHRINKAGE AND PERMEABILITY, ARE INFLUENCED OR CONTROLLED BY THE PORES IN THE CONCRETE AND THE RELATIVE AMOUNTS OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PORES. THE PAPER EXAMINES THE MANNER IN WHICH THESE PORES ORIGINATE, THE FACTORS AFFECTING THEM, AND THE LIMITS WITHIN WHICH THEIR VOLUMES MAY VARY. CAPILLARY AND GEL PORES IN CEMENT-WATER PASTES, AGGREGATE PORES, AND AIR PORES (AIR VOIDS) ARE DEFINED. POROSITY, PERMEABILITY AND ABSORPTIVITY OF CONCRETE AND THE EFFECT OF POSITIVE PORE-WATER PRESSURES DUE TO FREEZING OF SATURATED PASTES AND TO ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION ARE DISCUSSED. /PCA/
