SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE MECHANICS OF ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION
VISUAL FEATURES ARE DESCRIBED OF ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION IN CONCRETE WHEREBY REACTION MAY BE IDENTIFIED NOT ONLY AS HAVING OCCURRED BUT PARTICULARLY AS HAVING BEEN A CAUSE OF PHYSICAL DAMAGE. DISCUSSION BY M. A. SWAYZE, W. C. HANSEN, AND W . C. HANNA IS INCLUDED. SWAYZE EMPHASIZES THE CONTRIBUTION TO PHYSICAL DAMAGE. "IS MADE THROUGH DIRECT ENLARGEMENT, IN PLACE, OF THE AFFECTED PIECES OF AGGREGATE." HANSEN REITERATES THE HYPOTHESIS THAT EXPANSION IS DUE TO OSMOSIS AND HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE.
