A DETAILED, CRITICAL REVIEW IS PRESENTED CONCERNED PRIMARILY WITH EQUILIBRIA IN THE SYSTEM CALCIUM OXIDE- SILICON OXIDE-WATER AT ORDINARY TEMPERATURE, BUT DEALING ALSO WITH THE HYDRATION OF THE SILICATES IN CEMENT AND THE PURE SILICATES AS PASTES. EFFECTS OF ALKALIES ARE ALSO CONSIDERED. A METHOD OF MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THE IONS IN SOLUTION APPLICABLE WHEN SEVERAL STEPS OF HYDROLYSIS ARE INVOLVED IS OUTLINED.
