RATE OF SEDIMENTATION: I. NONFLOCCULATED SUSPENSIONS OF UNI- FORM SPHERES; II. SUSPENSIONS OF UNIFORM-SIZE ANGULAR PARTICLES; III. CONCENTRATED FLOCCULATED SUSPENSIONS OF POWDERS
IN THESE THREE PAPERS, A THEORY OF SEDIMENTATION IN PORTLAND CEMENT PASTES IS DEVELOPED BY STUDIES OF SUSPENSIONS OF A VARIETY OF FINE POWDERS, INCLUDING TAPIOCA, GLASS SPHERES, EMERY, GROUND GLASS, BURNED SHALE, SILICA, AND LIMESTONE. VARIOUS CONCENTRATIONS AND FINENESSES WERE USED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF PARTICLE INTERFERENCE, ADHESION OF THE LIQUID, AND FLOCCULATION. A RATE EQUATION IS DERIVED AND SHOWN TO BE CONSISTENT WITH POWERS' EQUATION FOR CEMENT PASTES. /PCA/
