NATURE AND ROLE OF CHANGES IN PHASE VOLUMES DURING HARDENING OF BINDERS AND CONCRETES (IN RUSSIAN)
A REVIEW OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA SHOWS THAT THE BEST BINDERS IN CONCRETE ARE THOSE IN WHICH THE HARDENING IS ACCOMPANIED BY STABLE BINDING OF A MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF WATER WITH MODERATE CONTRACTION AND A CONSIDERABLE GROWTH IN THE ABSOLUTE SOLID PHASE VOLUME COMPARED WITH THE INITIAL SOLID PHASE VOLUME. IN THIS CASE CONCRETES, EVEN WITH A WATER-CEMENT RATIO OF 0.5-0.6, SHOW A HIGH DENSITY WITHOUT GREAT CONTRACTION POROSITY. A GOOD EXAMPLE IS ALUMINA CEMENT, THE HARDENING OF WHICH IS DUE TO THE INTERACTION OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE ALUMINATE WITH WATER, 62.7% (BASED ON CALCIUM ALUMINATE WEIGHT) OF WHICH PASSES INTO THE SOLID PHASE.
