WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION EXPERIENCE WITH ALKALI-CARBONATE REACTION
A MONITORING PROGRAM ON CARBONATE ROCKS HAS BEEN CONDUCTED FOR THE PAST FOUR OR FIVE YEARS BY THE CONCRETE DIVISION, WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION. PRISMS OR CYLINDERS WERE MADE OF EVERY CARBONATE ROCK THAT CAME INTO THE LABORATORY IN WHICH THE COMPOSITION OF THE CARBONATE PORTION IS NEAR 50 PERCENT CALCITE OR 50 PERCENT DOLOMITE. ALL OF THESE CYLINDERS HAVE BEEN MEASURED AND NO AGGREGATE HAS BEEN FOUND WHICH CONTAINED ENOUGH EXPANSIVE ROCK TO CAUSE AVOIDANCE OF USE. SLIDES ARE PRESENTED OF SPECIMENS SHOWING THE VARIOUS AGGREGATES.
