CHEMICAL AND STRUCTUAL INVESTIGATIONS OF SOLID SOLUTIONS OF TRICALCIUM SILICATE

IN THE CALCIUM OXIDE-MAGNESIUM OXIDE-ALUMINUM OXIDE- OXIDE QUARTERLY TETRAHEDRON MODEL, THE CALCIUM SILICATE PHASE CONSTITUTES A TRIVARIANT SOLID SOLUTION BODY IN WHICH THE CONTENTS OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE-ALUMINUM OXIDE AND CALCIUM OXIDE ARE INDEPENDENT PARAMETERS. THE BODY IS ALMOST PRISMATIC IN SHAPE. THE LIMITS OF SUBSTITUTION FOR MAGNESIUM OXIDE (2.0% AT 1550 C) AND ALUMINUM OXIDE (1.0%) DO NOT INFLUENCE EACH OTHER. THE CALCIUM OXIDE CONTENT OF THE SOLID SOLUTIONS IS VARIABLE AND THE CALCIUM OXIDE WIDTH DEPENDS ON THE SUBSTITUTION OF MAGNESIUM AND ALUMINUM. IN TERMS OF CRYSTAL CHEMISTRY THE COMBINED SUBSTITUTION OF MAGNESIUM AND ALUMINUM CORRESPONDS TO AN INDEPENDENT SUPERPOSITION OF THE TWO ATOMS: MAGNESIUM ALWAYS REPLACES CALCIUM, WHILE ALUMINUM CAN REPLACE BOTH SILICON AND CALCIUM AND CAN ENTER WHOLES IN THE STRUCTURE. THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE ALUMINUM OVER THESE THREE PLACES IS DETERMINED BY THE AVAILABILITY OF CALCIUM OXIDE. IN THE CASE OF COMBINED SUBSTITUTION OF MAGNESIUM AND ALUMINUM, OF THE SIX MODIFICATIONS OF CALCIUM SILICATE THOSE DESIGNED AS T-1, T-2 AND M-1 ARE STABILIZED. THE SOLID SOLUTION BODY IS, IN CONSEQUENCE THEREOF, SUBDIVIDED INTO THE DOMAINS OF THESE THREE MODIFICATIONS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. /AUTHOR/
