CONTRIBUTION TO THE KNOWLEDEGE OF THE CALCIUM HYDROSILICATES FORMED IN LIME SILICATE CONCRETE

LIME SILICATE CONCRETE PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED ON A TECHNICAL SCALE CONSTITUTE AN ECONOMIC PROPOSITION IN THE BULK DENSITY RANGE FROM ABOUT 0.4 TO ABOUT 2.1 T/CUBIC METERS WITH COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS RANGING APPROXIMATELY FROM 40 TO 600 KG/SQ. CM. THE DATA CONCERNING THE CONTROL OF THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES, AS PUBLISHED IN THE LITERATURE, ARE BASED IN THE MAIN ON EMPIRICAL TESTS. THE INFORMATION RELATING TO THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH THE CALCIUM HYDROSILICATES ARE FORMED IN TECHNICAL PRODUCTS AND TO THE PROPERTIES OF THESE HYDROSILICATES IS IN PART CONTRADICTORY. SINCE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE ACTUAL CONDITIONS FOR THE DEPENDABLE MANUFACTURE OF HIGH-GRADE SILICATE CONCRETE PRODUCTS WITH PREDETERMINABLE PROPERTIES IS OF MAJOR TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE. A DETAILED EXAMINATION OF THE RELEVANT LITERATURE WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE PRESENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE. IT WAS FOUND THAT THERE IS A LARGE MEASURE OF AGREEMENT AS TO THE CSH PHASES OCCURRING IN TECHNICAL PRODUCTS. INSUFFICIENT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE WITH REGARD TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE LIME-SAND MIXES AND OF STEAM CURING UPON THE RATE OF INTERACTION OF LIME AND SAND AND THUS UPON THE RATE OF FORMATION AND CONVERSION OF THE INDIVIDUAL CSH PHASES. BECAUSE OF THEIR GREAT IMPORTANCE, CLARIFICATION OF THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD CONSTITUTE ONE OF THE TOP-PRIORITY RESEARCH TASKS IN THE FIELD OF SILICATE CONCRETE. /AUTHOR/
