ESTIMATION OF DISINTEGRATION IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES

A LITERATURE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED ON: (1) THE SPECIFIC MECHANISMS AND INDICATIONS OF DETERIORATION OF CONCRETE, AND (2) NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF CONCRETE, WITH EMPHASIS ON ACOUSTIC AND NUCLEAR TECHNIQUES. A LABORATORY EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED ON THE FEASIBILITY OF ULTRASONIC AND NUCLEAR FIELD TESTING PROCEDURES TO DEVELOP TECHNIQUES WHICH WOULD PERMIT RAPID FIELD MEASUREMENTS TO DETECT THE EXTENT OF STRUCTURAL REINFORCED CONCRETE DETERIORATION WITH REASONABLE ACCURACY. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO MEASURE THE DEGREE OF DETERIORATION IN PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE USING A DUAL-MODE ULTRASONIC TECHNIQUE. THE VELOCITIES OF BOTH RAYLEIGH WAVES AND LONGITUDINAL WAVES IN THE NEAR SURFACE ARE MEASURED AND RELATED TO THE QUANTITY OF THE CONCRETE. THE EFFECT OF MOISTURE CONTENT AND THE CAUSE OF DETERIORATIONS NEED EVALUATION. THE FEASIBILITY OF USING RADIOACTIVE PENETRANTS TO MEASURE SURFACE CRACK DEPTHS IN CONCRETE AS AN INDEX OF SURFACE INTEGRITY WAS INVESTIGATED USING A CESIUM-137 SOURCE IN A SILICA SAND MEDIUM.
