COMPARISON OF RING-TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE WITH COMPRESSIVE, FLEXURAL, AND SPLITTING-TENSILE STRENGTHS
A BRIEF HISTORICAL ACCOUNT IS PRESENTED OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE VARIOUS DIRECT AND INDIRECT METHODS USED FOR DETERMINING THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY DETAILS OF TESTS CARRIED OUT TO CORRELATE RING- TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE WITH COMPRESSIVE, FLEXURAL, AND SPLITTING-TENSILE STRENGTHS. THIRTY-NINE CONCRETE MIXES INVOLVING 629 TEST SPECIMENS WERE MADE. COMPARATIVE RING, BEAM, AND CYLINDER SPECIMENS WERE CAST FROM THE SAME BATCH OF CONCRETE AND TESTED AT 28 DAYS. THE TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO STATISTICAL ANALYSES. THE LINES OF BEST FIT TOGETHER WITH 95 PER CENT CONFIDENCE LIMITS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED. THE REGRESSION ANALYSES SHOW THAT THERE IS A HIGH DEGREE OF CORRELATION BETWEEN THE RING-TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE AND COMPRESSIVE, FLEXURAL, AND SPLITTING-TENSILE STRENGTHS. THE CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS VARY FROM 0.942 TO 0.986. THE STATISTICAL ANALYSES ALSO INDICATE THAT THE REPRODUCIBILITY OF THE RING-TENSILE STRENGTH TEST IS COMPARABLE TO THE REPRODUCIBILITY OBTAINED IN THE OTHER STANDARD TESTS. THE PAPER CONCLUDES BY STATING THAT THE RING TEST IS A SATISFACTORY MEANS OF DETERMINING THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE. /JM/
