AN ANALYSIS OF DRYING SHRINKAGE DATA FOR PORTLAND CEMENT MORTAR AND CONCRETE
AN ANALYSIS OF DRYING SHRINKAGE DATA OBTAINED IN A COOPERATIVE TEST INITIATED BY THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON VOLUME CHANGE OF ASTM COMMITTEE C-1 ON CEMENT HAS BEEN MADE. A MATHEMATICAL MODEL WHICH DESCRIBES THE AMOUNT OF SHRINKAGE AS A FUNCTION OF TIME HAS BEEN FOUND TO APPLY TO BOTH MORTAR AND CONCRETE DATA. THE MODEL CAN BE USED TO ESTIMATE THE ULTIMATE SHRINKAGE EXPECTED FROM A GIVEN CEMENT. THE ULTIMATE SHRINKAGE VALUE PROVIDES A TIME-INDEPENDENT BASIS FOR COMPARING THE PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT CEMENTS. ANALYSES OF BOTH MORTAR AND CONCRETE RESULTS SHOWED SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN ULTIMATE SHRINKAGE AMONG FOUR TYPES OF CEMENT. CORRELATIONS BETWEEN MORTAR AND CONCRETE PERFORMANCE WERE ACHIEVED WHEN EACH LABORATORY WAS CONSIDERED INDIVIDUALLY TO ELIMINATE THE LABORATORY-TO-LABORATORY VARIABILITY. /JM/
