DIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE
THIS PAPER COMPARES THE RESULTS OF THE DIRECT TENSION TEST OF CONCRETE WITH TENSILE-STRENGTH TESTS BY INDIRECT METHODS (FLEXURAL AND SPLITTING STRENGTH). THE DIRECT TENSILE-STRENGTH TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON CONCRETE SPECIMENS OF VARIOUS COMPOSITION, AGE, AND SHAPE (CYLINDERS AND PRISMS). THE RESULTS CONFIRMED THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ESTABLISH GENERALLY VALID CONVERSION FACTORS FOR THE RELATION BETWEEN THESE STRENGTHS AND THAT THE TRUE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE CAN BE FOUND ONLY BY A DIRECT METHOD. THE MAIN PART OF THE PAPER DEALS WITH THE PRACTICAL UTILIZATION OF THE TEST FOR THE DIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE USING THE METHOD DEVELOPED BY THE BUILDING RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF PRAGUE FOR THE CONTROL OF THE QUALITY OF STRUCTURES IN WHICH THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE IS OF DECISIVE SIGNIFICANCE, FOR EXAMPLE, DAMS, ROADWAYS, TANKS, ETC. THE MOST ECONOMICAL TEST SPECIMENS TAKEN FROM THESE STRUCTURES ARE DRILLED CORES. SINCE THEY MAY HAVE VARIOUS SLENDERNESS VALUES, H/D, THE EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION WAS CONCERNED WITH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SLENDERNESS OF THE TEST CYLINDERS AND THEIR DIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH. IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ESTABLISH THE BASIC DIMENSIONS OF THE CYLINDERS (SLENDERNESS H/D = 2) AND TO DERIVE A GENERALLY VALID RELATION FOR CONCRETES WITH BOTH RIVER PEBBLES AND GRANULATED AGGREGATES FOR CONVERSION OF THE APPARENT DIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH OF CYLINDERS WITH H/D LESS THAN 2 TO THE STRENGTH OF CYLINDERS OF BASIC DIMENSIONS. /JM/
