DURABILITY OF MASONRY
THE DURABILITY OF MASONRY CAN BE INCREASED GREATLY BY MINIMIZING DIMENSIONAL CHANGES AND BY ALLOWING FOR THOSE THAT OCCUR. CAUSES OF DIMENSIONAL CHANGES ARE INITIAL SETTING, MOISTURE, TEMPERATURE, FREEZING AND THAWING, AND CHEMICAL REACTIONS. INITIAL SETTING OF MORTAR CAUSES THE GREATEST SHRINKAGE. THIS EFFECT CAN BE REDUCED BY USING THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF WATER AND BY INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF LIME IN CEMENT LIME MORTARS AND AIR IN AIR-ENTRAINING MORTARS. TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF MOISTURE, THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS: (1) PROPER CURING (HE PREFERS WHITE PIGMENT MEMBRANE CURE), (2) RUBBERIZED ASPHALT, POLYSULFIDE, OR POLYURETHANE SEALANTS, (3) POLY (VINYL CLORIDE) WATER STOPS, AND (4) SILICONES AND OTHER WATERPROOFING COMPOUNDS. VERY LITTLE CAN BE DONE ABOUT THERMAL EFFECTS. EXPANSION JOINTS SHOULD BE USED TO ALLOW FOR THEM. AIR ENTRAINMENT IN MORTAR IMPROVES RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING. A LIMITED NUMBER OF TESTS INDICATE THAT IN THE PRESENCE OF MOISTURE, MAGNESIUM OXIDE WILL BE HYDRATED AND CAUSE EXPANSION. LIMES CONFORMING TO ASTM METHOD C 209 WILL REDUCE THIS EFFECT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXPANDING AGGREGATES AND EXPANDING CEMENTS MAY ELIMINATE SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS. /JM/
