CEMENT-POZZOLAN REACTIONS

MIXTURES OF CALCIUM HYDROXIDE, POZZOLAN, AND WATER WERE REACTED AT 100F FOR 1 TO 6 MONTHS, AND THE REACTION PRODUCTS WERE EXAMINED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION AND THERMAL ANALYSIS. THE COMPOUNDS IDENTIFIED INCLUDED A POORLY CRYSTALLIZED CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE, TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE HEXA-HYDRATE (OR HYDROGARNET), TETRACALCIUM ALUMINATE HYDRATE CONTAINING CARBON DIOXIDE, AND STRATLING'S QUATERNARY COMPOUND, CALCIUM OXIDE, ALUMINUM OXIDE, SILICON OXIDE, WATER. MIXTURES OF PORTLAND CEMENT, POZZOLAN, AND WATER UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS YIELDED POORLY CRYSTALLIZED CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE, COMPLEX CALCIUM ALUMINATE HYDRATES CONTAINING SILICON OXIDE AND/OR CARBON DIOXIDE, CALCIUM HYDROXIDE, AND STRATLING'S COMPOUND. THE REACTION PRODUCTS OBTAINED DEPENDED ON THE TYPE OF POZZOLAN AND/OR ON THE COMPOSITION OF THE PORTLAND CEMENT, AND, TO A LESSER DEGREE, ON OTHER FACTORS. /AUTHOR/
