BEHAVIOR OF A SINGLE SPAN COMPOSITE GIRDER BRIDGE

THE REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A MOVING LOAD TEST OF A 137 FOOT SIMPLE SPAN COMPOSITE STEEL AND CONCRETE PLATE GIRDER STRUCTURE. THE BRIDGE WAS LOCATED WITH A TWO-AXLE TRUCK MOVING SLOWLY ACROSS THE SPAN IN NINE LATERAL POSITIONS. STRAINS AND DEFLECTIONS AT MIDSPAN AND QUARTER POINT IN THE CONCRETE SLAB AND ON VARIOUS POINTS ON THREE OF THE FOUR GIRDERS WERE MEASURED AS THE VEHICLE CROSSED THE BRIDGE. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF TABLES AS GIRDER MOMENTS AND BOTTOM FLANGE STRAIN DISTRIBUTIONS. THE SECOND PART OF THE REPORT EXPLAINS AND PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS WHICH ATTEMPTS TO DUPLICATE THE FIELD RESULTS. THE GENERALIZED SLOPE DEFLECTION METHOD IS USED WITH THE BRIDGE DECK AND GIRDERS TRANSFORMED INTO A RECTANGULAR GRID SYSTEM. CALCULATIONS ARE PERFORMED ON AN IBM 7090 COMPUTER. COMPARISON OF ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE DISTRIBUTION OF MOMENTS BETWEEN GIRDERS WAS CLOSE, BUT THE TOTAL EXPERIMENTALLY OBTAINED MOMENTS WERE CONSISTENTLY LOWER BY ABOUT 15 PERCENT THAN THE CORRESPONDING ANALYTICAL MOMENTS. CLOSER AGREEMENT IS OBTAINED WHEN CERTAIN SECONDARY EFFECTS SUCH AS LATERAL BRACING BETWEEN GIRDERS AND VARIATIONS IN THE STEEL AND CONCRETE MODULI OF ELASTICITY ARE INCLUDED IN THE ANALYSIS. /BPR/
