THE USE OF THE BETATRON TO DETECT DEFECTS IN THICK CONCRETE AND REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES /IN RUSSIAN/
DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A NON-DESTRUCTIVE METHOD OF DETECTING DEFECTS IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES TOO THICK TO BE TESTED BY X-RAYS OR GAMMA RAYS. THE USE OF A FLUX OF ELECTRONS ACCELERATED BY A BETATRON ENABLES THE AVAILABLE ENERGY TO BE INCREASED TO 30 MEV. RESULTS OBTAINED WITH FIXED AND MOBILE BETATRONS ARE PRESENTED. THIS METHOD CAN BE USED FOR THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF CONCRETE 2 M THICK (DENSITY 2.4 T/M CUBED) WITH AN EXPOSURE TIME OF SEVERAL HOURS. DATA ARE GIVEN ON DETECTION THRESHOLDS (MINIMUM DIMENSION OF DEFECTS, MINMUM DIAMETER OF THE REINFORCEMENT). THIS METHOD CAN ALSO BE USED FOR LOCATING THE REINFORCEMENT AND DETECTING ITS CORROSION.
