INFLUENCE OF HYDRAULIC AND THERMAL SHRINKAGE ON THE CRACKING OF CONCRETE /IN FRENCH/

THE MAXIMUM THERMAL SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE WHICH IS GENERALLY GREATER THAN ITS MAXIMUM HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE IS PRESENTED. BOTH TYPES OF SHRIINKAGE IN CONCRETE REACH A DEPTH EXPRESSED AS FOLLOWS: X=K SQUARE ROOT TIME; BUT K IS AT LEAST 100 TIMES SMALLER FOR HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE THAN FOR THERMAL SHRINKAGE. THIS RESULTS IN THE HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE BEING CONTINUOUS WHILE CLIMATIC THERMAL SHRINKAGE IS ALTERNATE. THERMAL SHRINKAGE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE BECAUSE OF ITS VALUE, SPEED AND ALTERNATE CHARACTERISTICS. HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE, INFLUENCED BY THE NATURE OF THE CEMENT, IS THEREFORE ONLY A MINOR FACTOR IN CRACKING. EXCEPTIONAL DRYING SHRINKAGE OCCURING BEFORE THE END OF SETTING IS DIFFERENT FROM HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE. /LCPC(A)/RRL/
