AN ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENT OF THE EFFECTIVE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA FOR CONDUCTION OR FLOW PROCESS IN CEMENT PASTE

THE EFFECTIVE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA FOR CONDUCTION OR LIQ- UID FLOW PROCESS IN A POROUS MATERIAL IS NOT USUALLY EQUAL TO POROSITY VALUE PHI BUT TO PHI SUBSCRIPT M, WHERE M IS GREATER THAN 1. A SIMPLE WAY OF OBTAINING THIS VALUE IS DESCRIBED AND MEASUREMENTS ARE REPORTED FOR SATURATED ORDINARY AND HIGH ALUMINA CEMENT PASTE SPECIMENS WITH WATER/CEMENT RATIOS OF 0.28 AND 0.5 CURED BETWEEN 1 AND 28 DAYS, AND PARTIALLY SATURATED SPECIMENS 35 DAYS OLD. THE RESULTS ARE USED TO CALCULATE THE MEAN PORE RADIUS IN CEMENT PASTE WITH A WATER/CEMENT RATIO OF 0.5 AND TO DETERMINE THE CONTRIBUTION OF VAPOR DIFFUSION TO MOISTURE MOVEMENT IN ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT PASTE DRYING BETWEEN 50 AND 95 C. IT WAS FOUND THAT, EVEN AT A LOW EVAPORABLE MOISTURE CONTENT OF 10%, MECHANISMS OTHER THAN VAPOR DIFFUSION ARE CAUSING MOISTURE TRANSFER. /RRL/A/
