A STUDY OF BOND BETWEEN STEEL AND RESTRAINED EXPANDING CONCRETE

A CRITICAL PROFESSIONAL QUESTION WHICH MAY ARISE WITH THE COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY OF EXPANDING CONCRETE CONCERNS THE ABILITY TO REINFORCE THE CONCRETE WITH STEEL BARS. IN PARTICULAR THE BOND PHENOMENA ARE OPEN TO CONJECTURE. THESE PHENOMENA ARE STUDIED HERE BY MEANS OF TESTS WHICH HAVE PREVIOUSLY INDICATED THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BOND FAILURE IN ORDINARY CONCRETE. SUCH TESTS INDICATE THE BOND MECHANISM BETWEEN EXPANDING CONCRETE, PROPERLY RESTRAINED FROM RADIAL MOTION, AND AN UNDEFORMED REINFORCING BAR. COMPARISONS WITH THE ORDINARY CONCRETE CASE ARE MADE AND A DISCUSSION OF THE PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROBLEM IS GIVEN. /RRL/A/
