SOME ASPECTS OF THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE CONTAINING CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES
DATA ARE PRESENTED ON THE EFFECTS OF SOME WET-MODIFYING AND WATER-REDUCING ADMIXTURES ON THE SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE AFTER VARIOUS PERIODS OF DRYING IN AIR AT 50 PERCENT RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND 23C. SHRINKAGE MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE IN TWO SERIES OF CONCRETES MADE FROM TWO DIFFERENT PORTLAND CEMENTS. THE RELATIVE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS ADMIXTURES ON SHRINKAGE VARIED WITH THE LENGTH OF THE DRYING PERIOD AND WITH THE CONSTITUTION OF THE CEMENT USED. THESE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT THE EFFECTS OF ADMIXTURES ON THE SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE SHOULD BE ASSESSED AT A NUMBER OF DRYING PERIODS RATHER THAN AT ONE ARBITRARY PERIOD. IN ADDITION, SINCE THE RELATIVE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT ADMIXTURES DEPEND ON CEMENT CONSTITUTION, IT IS DIFFICULT TO SPECIFY GENERAL SHRINKAGE LIMITS FOR CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES FOR USE IN CONCRETE. AT PRESENT IT SEEMS LOGICAL TO RESTRICT THE TESTING OF THE EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES ON SHRINKAGE TO CONCRETES MADE FROM SPECIFIC MATERIALS AND FOR SPECIFIC USES. /LCPC/RRL/
