THE INFLUENCE OF SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES ON THE STRENGTH AND ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE /IN RUSSIAN/

A SERIES OF TESTS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH WERE CARRIED OUT AT 20 DEGREES C, -10 DEGREES C AND -60 DEGREES C ON SAMPLES 516 TO 550 DAYS OLD, TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF THE MOISTURE CONTENT ON THE BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE DURING FREEZING-THAWING CYCLES. TEST RESULTS SHOW THAT THE BASIC FACTORS INFLUENCING CONCRETE DEFORMATION AND STRENGTH ARE MOISTURE CONTENT AND TEMPERATURE. THE CONCEPT OF CRITICAL MOISTURE CONTENT IN CONCRETE IS DEFINED AND DETERMINED EXPERIMENTALLY. THE INCREASE IN STRENGTH AND ELASTIC MODULUS IS A DIRECT FUNCTION OF THE MOISTURE CONTENT AND TEMPERATURE DROP UP TO THE CRITICAL MOISTURE CONTENT STAGE; BELOW THIS THE VARIATION IS REVERSED. WHEN THE CONCRETE IS FROZEN, ITS STRENGTH AND ELASTIC MODULUS DECREASE AFTER THAWING, COMPARED WITH THE VALUES BEFORE FREEZING. /LCPC/RRL/
