EXPERIENCES WITH SKID RESISTANCE EPOXY ASPHALT SURFACING ON CALIFORNIA TOLL BRIDGES

THE TOLL BRIDGE ADMINISTRATION OF THE CALIFORNIA DOT MANAGES EIGHTS OF THE NINE TOLL BRIDGES WITHING THE STATE. THREE OF THE BRIDGES HAVE SURFACING PROBLEMS: PAVEMENTS THICKER THAN ONE AND ONE-HALF INCHES APPLIED TO ORTHOTROPIC STEEL PLATE DECKS, PAVEMENTS FROM ONE-HALF TO ONE INCH THICK APPLIED TO CONCRETE DECKS, AND CHIP SEALS ONE-FOURTH INCH OR LESS IN THICKNESS ALSO APPLIED TO CONCRETE. EXPOXY ASPHALT HAS BEEN PLACED ON THESE BRIDGES. IT IS SIMILAR TO ASPHALT CONCRETE EXCEPT THAT EPOXY RESIN ADDED TO THE ASPHALT PRODUCES A THERMOSET PLASTIC SURFACING. EXPOXY ASPHALT CHIP SEAL PRODUCES THE SAME PLASTIC IN CONTRAST TO ASPHALT CHIP SEAL. TWELVE TEST AREAS USING EPOXY ASPHALT WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGGREGATE WERE STUDIED. SIX FACTORS WERE USED TO JUDGE THE SURFACINGS INCLUDING POLISH VALUES OF AGGREGATES AS DETERMINED BY THE BRITISH WHEEL TEST, AND TOWED TRAILER SKID TESTS. THE SKID TESTS WERE TAKEN AT 40 MPH AND 50 MPH WITH BOTH A SMOOTH TIRE (FOR CHECKING THE MACRO-TEXTURING OF SURFACINGS AND THE HYDROPLANING TENDENCY) AND THE STANDARD ASTM RIBBED TIRE. FOR THE TWELVE TEST AREAS, COMPOSITE SKID NUMBERS WITH SPEED GRADIENT GRAPHS SHOW THAT EPOXY ASPHALT SURFACINGS HELP OBTAIN THE MAXIMUM SKID RESISTANCE PERFORMANCE FROM SKID RESISTANT AGGREGATES.
