MEASUREMENT OF PAVEMENT DEFORMATIONS USING INDUCTION COILS
A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF SOIL STRAIN IS DESCRIBED. INFORMATION ON THE INSTRUMENTATION AND USE OF THE STRAIN GAUGE IS COLLATED, AND THE USE OF INSTRUMENT IN ASPHALT CONCRETE IS DESCRIBED. THIS 'FREE FLATING" STRAIN GAUGE HAS MANY POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS. THE CONTROL OF PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION, INCLUDING DENSIFICATION AND EMBANKMENT WORK, WOULD BE EASILY MONITORED USING THE GAUGE. THE METHOD MIGHT BE APPLIED IN SOIL MECHANICS FOR TRIAXIAL TESTING, SHRINKAGE, CONSOLIDATION, DYNAMIC LOAD TESTING, BURIED PIPELINES OR CULVERTS.
