A MODEL FOR THE KINETICS OF THE HARDENING OF PORLTAND CEMENT
A FORMULA IS PROPOSED THAT DESCRIBES THE KINETICS OF THE HARDENING PROCESS OF A PORTLAND CEMENT AS A FUNCTION OF THE TRICALCIUM SULFATE CONTENT AND TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE CONTENT. THE FORMULA IS THE MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION OF A SIMPLE CEMENT MODEL WHICH CONSISTS ONLY OF TWO HARDENING COMPONENTS AND SATISFIES SEVERAL LOGICAL CONDITIONS. THE PROPERIES OF THE MODEL AND DERIVATION OF THE FORMULA ARE PRESENTED. THE VALUES CALCULATED BY THE NEW FORMULA ARE COMPARED TO EXPERIMENTAL VALUES OF COMPRESSIVE, TENSILE, AND FLEXURAL STRENGTHS PUBLISHED EARLIER, AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE EQUATION IS APPLICABLE FOR THE KINETICS OF THE HARDENING OF A LARGE GROUP OF AIR-ENTRAINED AND NON-AIR-ENTRAINED PORTLAND CEMENTS WITH REASONABLE ACCURACY. IT IS ALSO FOUND THAT THE SPECIFIC RATE OF STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT CAN BE CONSIDERED AS A LINEAR FUNCTION, AND THE SPECIFIC DECELERATION OF THE STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT AS A QUADRATIC FUNCTION OF THE TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE CONTENT OF THE CEMENT. /AUTHOR/
