DRYING SHRINKAGE OF PRECAST CONCRETE ELEMENTS

AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION WAS MADE OF THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE, WHICH COMPRISED THREE TESTS; /1/ A LABORATORY TEST ON CONCRETE BEAMS MADE WITH VARIOUS TYPES OF CEMENT AND VARIOUS TYPES OF AGGREGATE, AND CURED UNDER VARIOUS CLIMATIC CONDITIONS; /2/ A TEST ON FACTORY-MADE PRECAST CONCRETE PANELS AND SLABS, WHOSE DRYING SHRINKAGE WAS RECORDED DURING ONE YEAR, AND /3/ A LABORATORY TEST CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF STEAM CURING ON THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE BEAMS. THE MAIN CONCLUSION DRAWN FROM THIS INVESTIGATION WAS THAT THE DEVELOPMENT AND THE AMOUNT OF THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE IS CONTROLLED MAINLY BY VARIATIONS IN THE HUMIDITY AND IN THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SURROUNDINGS. THUS, IN VIEW OF THE UNCERTAIN AND UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS WHICH PREVAIL IN DENMARK, THE TOTAL DRYING SHRINKAGE MAY BE EXPECTED TO OCCUR, AFTER THE ASSEMBLY OF CONCRETE ELEMENTS, AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR. /AUTHOR/
