CONCRETE IN THE VERRAZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE
ICE IS USED IN CONCRETE MIX TO REDUCE THE MAXIMUM INTERNAL TEMPERATURES IN THE MASS CONCRETE OF BRIDGE ANCHORAGES. THE EFFECT OF VARYING AMOUNTS OF ICE ON THE INITIAL CONCRETE PLACING TEMPERATURE IS SHOWN. SOME DATA IS GIVEN ON THE MAXIMUM ACHIEVED INTERNAL TEMPERATURES / 150 AND 110 F /, AND THE VARIATION OF TEMPERATURE WITH TIME AND AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. THE EFFECT OF THE USE OF ICE IN THE BRIDGE PAVEMENT CONCRETE IS DISCUSSED. A NOVEL TYPE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENT FOR BRIDGES IS DESCRIBED. THE DIFFICULTIES OF CONTROL OF THE SURFACE OF THE PAVEMENT ON A FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE ARE EXPLAINED AS WELL AS THE METHOD USED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
