APPLICATION OF DIFFERENTIAL THERMOGRAVIMETRY TO THE STUDY OF THE HYDRATION OF CEMENTS

DIFFERENTIAL THERMOGRAVIMETRY WAS FOUND TO BE AN EXCELLENT TOOL TO FOLLOW CEMENT HYDRATION. DTG CURVES OF SEVERAL INDUSTRIAL AND SYNTHETIC PORTLAND CEMENTS HYDRATED AT ROOM TEMPERATURES WERE COMPARED TO CURVES OF PURE HYDRATES AND MIXTURES OF PURE HYDRATES. IN THE GIVEN EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS /W/C RATIO EQUALS 0.27/ ONLY HYDRATED CALCIUM SILICATE, ETTRINGITE, AC4H13 BETA AND CALCIUM HYDROXIDE WERE OBSERVED. AC3H6 DOES NOT APPEAR. PASTE HYDRATION OF CEMENT GENERALLY YIELDS HYDRATES WHICH ARE POORLY CRYSTALLIZED OR OCCUR AS A GEL. THIS RENDERS UNRELIABLE MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS AND RADIOCRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ANALYSES.
