PAVEMENT DEFLECTION AS A PAVEMENT OVERLAY CRITERIA
DYNAFLECT EQUIPMENT WAS USED TO MEASURE DEFLECTION ON 221 MILES OF WASHINGTON HIGHWAYS. THIS STUDY RELATES PRIMARILY TO PAVEMENT SYSTEMS CONSISTING OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE OVER CEMENT TREATED BASES, ASPHALT TREATED BASES, OR UNTREATED AGGREGATE BASES. THE EQUIPMENT WAS EVALUATED FOR USE IN MEASURING PAVEMENT CONDITIONS SO THAT NEED AND SCHEDULING FOR OVERLAYS COULD BE DETERMINED. EVALUATION INCLUDED A LITERATURE SURVEY TO REPORT USES OF DYNAFLECT BY OTHER STATES. THE ACCEPTABILITY OF THE EQUIPMENT WAS ESTABLISHED. STATISTICAL PROBLEMS OF SUBJECTIVE RATINGS AND MAGNITUDE OF DEFLECTIONS ARE DISCUSSED. CONCLUSIONS SHOW COMPATIBILITY WITH THE PRESENT RATING SYSTEM USED BY THE WASHNGTON DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS. /AUTHOR/
