DETERMINATION OF MEAN PORE RADII IN MINERAL AGGREGATES USING PERMEABILITY MEASUREMENTS
THE RELATION BETWEEN POROSITY AND PERMEABILITY IN POROUS AGGREGATES WAS STUDIED. TAKING DIFFUSION, SLIP FLOW, AND POISEUILLE FLOW INTO ACCOUNT, A THEORETICAL EQUATION WAS OFFERED FOR GAS FLOW THROUGH CAPILLARIES. THE EQUATION WAS USED TO CALCULATE MEAN PORE RADII AND EFFECTIVE PORE AREA FROM PERMEABILITY EXPERIMENTS ON SIX DIFFERENT MINERAL AGGREGATES. PERMEABILITY DATA WERE OBTAINED BY NITROGEN FLOW MEASUREMENTS, AND MEAN PORE RADII FOR COMPARISON WITH CALCULATED RADII WERE DETERMINED BY MERCURY POROSIMETRY. VALUES FOR MEAN PORE RADII THUS DETERMINED ARE GENERALLY IN GOOD AGREEMENT, BUT COMPLICATIONS ARISING FROM DIRECTIONAL INHOMOGENEITIES IN MOST NATURAL AGGREGATES REQUIRE FURTHER STUDY.
