USE OF FLY ASH AS ADMIXTURE IN AN EXPERIMENTAL PAVEMENT IN KANSAS

AN EXPERIMENTAL CONCRETE ROAD CONTAINING FLY-ASH AS PART REPLACEMENT FOR CEMENT HAS BEEN IN USE IN KANSAS FOR FOURTEEN YEARS. FIVE BRANDS OF CEMENT WERE USED WITH GRAVEL- SAND AGGREGATE AND FLYASH FROM THE SAME SOURCES IN ALL SECTIONS. FLEXURAL STRENGTHS OF LABORATORY TEST BEAMS /6 IN. BY 9 IN. BY 48 IN./ WERE INCREASED BY THE PRESENCE OF FLY-ASH BUT THE EXTENT OF THE INCREASE VARIED FROM ONE CEMENT BRAND TO ANOTHER, THE REASON FOR THIS IS NOT KNOWN. THE SUBSTITUTION OF FLY-ASH FOR 25 PER CENT OF THE CEMENT REDUCED SURFACE CRACKING AND ELIMINATED THE MAP- CRACKING. AIR-ENTRAINMENT TENDED TO REDUCE BUT NOT ELIMINATE THE ADVANTAGE IN FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF FLY-ASH CONCRETE. /RRL/
