METHODS FOR REDUCING EXPANSION OF CONCRETE CAUSED BY ALKALI- CARBONATE ROCK REACTIONS
MEASURES DISCUSSED FOR REDUCING CONCRETE EXPANSION WHEN REACTIVE CARBONATE AGGREGATES, PARTICULARLY ARGILLACEOUS DOLOMITIC LIMESTONES, MUST BE USED, ARE' 1/ REDUCTION OF THE CEMENT ALKALIES, AND 2/ DILUTION OF THE REACTIVE AGGREGATE WITH NON-REACTIVE AGGREGATE. THE MAIN EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON VOLUME CHANGE, THE PROPERTY MOST SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY THE REACTION. VOLUME CHANGES ARE BEING STUDIED FOR THREE EXPOSURE CONDITIONS' TWO IN THE LABORATORY AND ONE IN AN OUTDOOR TEST AREA. THE MEASURES UNDER STUDY ARE APPLIED TO CONCRETES CONTAINING TWO CARBONATE AGGREGATES, EACH EXHIBIT- ING A DIFFERENT DEGREE OF REACTIVITY, AND A DILUTING AGGREGATE, WHICH IS NON-REACTIVE. RESULTS ARE ALSO PRESENTED OF FREEZING-AND-THAWING TESTS BY ASTM C 291 AND TENSILE SPLITTING TESTS. THE EXPANSION OF CONCRETE CONTAINING ALKALI-REACTIVE CARBONATE AGGREGATES IS GREATLY INFLUENCED IN A PREDICTABLE MANNER BY THE FOLLOWING INTER-RELATED FACTORS' 1/ DEGREE OF ROCK REACTIVITY, 2/ AMOUNT OF REACTIVE COMPONENT PRESENT, 3/ ALKALI CONTENT OF THE CEMENT AND 4/ CONDITIONS OF STORAGE.
