GENERAL DISCUSSION OF VISCOSITY GRADING OF ASPHALTS

THE GRADING OF ASPHALT PERFORMANCE USING VISCOSITY TESTS IS DISCUSSED. THE VARIATION OF CONSISTENCY VALUES AT DIFFERENT SHEAR RATES AT LOW TEMPERATURES, WHERE ASPHALT CEMENTS ARE SHEAR SUSCEPTIBLE, POINTS TO THE NEED FOR NEW METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE LOW TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT CEMENTS. THE AUTHOR LISTS THE IMPORTANT RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AFFECTING THE FINISHED PAVEMENT AS THE VISCOSITY OF THE BINDER AT: (1) THE MIXING TEMPERATURE. (2) THE COMPACTION TEMPERATURE. (3) THE HIGHEST PAVEMENT SERVICE TEMPERATURE AND (4) THE LOWEST PAVEMENT SERVICE TEMPERATURE. A RECOMMENDATION IS MADE FOR AN ASPHALT CEMENT SPECIFICATION SETTING VISCOSITY LIMITS AT 140 F OR SOME OTHER HIGH TEMPERATURE AND TO SET A MAXIMUM LOW TEMPERATURE AT WHICH THE BINDER MUST PERFORM SATISFACTORILY IN A PAVEMENT ACCORDING TO AN UNDEVELOPED LOW TEMPERATURE TEST METHOD.
