A STUDY OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE METHODS TO DETERMINE THE DENSITY OF DEEP-LIFT ASPHALT CONCRETE BASE CONSTRUCTION
NONDESTRUCTIVE METHODS WERE USED TO OBTAIN DENSITY DATA, AND THE RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF THE CONVENTIONAL CORING METHOD. THE EQUIPMENT USED WAS A TROXLER NUCLEAR GAGE (MODEL 1401), A SOILTEST ASPHALT PAVING METER (MODEL AP-400), A SOILTEST PAVEMETER ADAPTED FOR USE OF NEGATIVE PRESSURE EQUIVALENT TO A MAXIMUM OF A 12-INCH HEAD OF WATER, AND JOHNS-MANVILLE WATER PERMEABILITY TEST EQUIPMENT. TEST CONDITIONS AND CONDUCT ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT USE OF A NUCLEAR DENSITY GAGE CAN RESULT IN BETTER PAVEMENTS, THAT THE APPLICATION OF THE SOIL TEST PAVEMETER IS AND THE WATER PERMEABILITY TEST ARE IMPRACTICAL FOR USE IN BASE CONSTRUCTION.
