TYPES AND USES OF HOT MIX STORAGE BINS ARE DESCRIBED. FOSTER PROVIDES A GENERAL SURVEY OF THE EQUIPMENT. BIN GEOMETRY IS ROUND, SQUARE, OR OBLONG. SURGE BINS CAN BE HEATED AND INSULATED WITH PARTIAL CLOSURE AT THE TOP, OR HEATED, INSULATED, AND EQUIPPED WITH AIR LOCKS AND PURGED WITH AN INERT GAS SYTEM. MIXES CAN BE STORED IN ANY OF THESE TYPES FOR CONSIDERABLE TIME, IN THE ASCENDING ORDER SURGE BIN, HEATED INSULATED BIN, PURGED BIN. OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS ARE DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH EFFECTS OF INCREASING STORAGE TIME AND VARIATIONS IN GRADATION. ADVANTAGES OF SUCH BINS ARE LISTED. BEATY LIMITS HIMSELF TO SURGE BINS AND STORAGE HOPPERS, DIVIDING THE TREATMENT INTO THREE PARTS: COMPARISON OF PREVIOUS EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE WITH THE MORE RECENT APPLICATIONS IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES, CONSIDERATIONS IN OPTIMIZING SURGE BIN UTILIZATION, AND COMPARATIVE COST ANALYSIS.
