THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE CONSTRUCTED WITH LARGE-SIZED AGGREGATE AND DISCUSSION

AN INVESTIGATION IS MADE OF THE USE OF LARGE-SIZED AGGREGATE IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXTURES. THE TERM "LARGE-SIZED AGGREGATES" REFERS TO AGGREGATES WHOSE MAXIMUM SIZE EXCEEDS 3/4 INCH. AGGREGATE WITH SUCH LARGE TOP-SIZE ARE NOT NORMALLY USED IN SURFACE MIXES, BUT HAVE BEEN USED IN CONSTRUCTION OF BASES AND SUBBASES FOR HIGHWAYS. MOST BITUMINOUS PAVING MIXTURES IN CURRENT USE ARE GRADED SO THAT THEIR AGGREGATE TOP SIZE DOES NOT NORMALLY EXCEED ONE INCH. IN THIS INVESTIGATION AGGREGATE PARTICLES AS LARGE AS 2 1/2 INCHES WERE INCORPORATED IN THE MIXTURES. VARIABLES WERE THE AGGREGATE SIZE AND THE ASPHALT CONTENT OF THE TESTED MIXTURES. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS INDICATED THAT THE INCORPORATION OF LARGE-SIZED AGGREGATE IN ASPHALTIC MIXTURES CAN BE BENEFICIAL BOTH STRUCTURALLY AND ECONOMICALLY. A LABORATORY STUDY INDICATED THAT EQUALLY STABLE MIXTURES CAN BE PRODUCED AT LESS ASPHALT CONTENT AS THE AGGREGATE SIZES ARE INCREASED. A FEASIBILITY STUDY IMPLIED THAT (A) THE EFFECT OF LARGE-SIZED AGGREGATE UPON THE CONSTRUCTING EQUIPMENT CAN BE APPRECIABLY LESS THAN MAY BE THOUGHT WITH ONLY A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THE RATE OF WEAR AND DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT, (B) THE MOST SERIOUS CONSTRUCTION PROBLEM IS SEGREGATION THAT MAY TAKE PLACE DURING LAY-DOWN OPERATIONS, AND (C) LARGE-SIZED MIXTURES CAN PROBABLY BE PRODUCED AT A LOWER COST THAN REGULARLY PRODUCED MIXTURES. /AUTHOR/
