THE EFFECT OF REST PERIODS ON THE FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF A HOT-ROLLED ASPHALT UNDER REVERSED AXIAL LOADING AND DISCUSSION

THE FIRST STAGE OF AN EXTENSIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM TO STUDY IN SOME DETAIL THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF TYPICAL BRITISH ROAD MATERIALS IS DESCRIBED. THIS WORK IS BEING DONE AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE BITUMEN AND COAL-TAR INDUSTRIES AND IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM. THE RRL RESEARCH PROGRAM AIMS TO QUANTIFY THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS TIME-AND-TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENT PARAMETERS TO ESTABLISH RELIABLE METHODS OF ACCELERATED TESTING FOR MATERIAL EVALUATION AND PAVEMENT DESIGN RELATED TO REPEATED LOADING. SOME RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR THE EFFECT OF REST PERIODS DURING INTERMITTENT PULSED LOADING. COMPARED WITH CONTINUOUS CYCLIC LOADING THE FATIGUE LIFE MAY BE INCREASED AS MUCH AS FIVE TIMES PROVIDED THAT THE REST TIME IS SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW STRAIN RECOVERY TO TAKE PLACE. /AUTHOR/
