THE RATIONAL DESIGN OF AGGREGATE GRADINGS FOR DENSE ASPHALTIC COMPOSITIONS
A STUDY OF THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE PACKING AND POROSITY OF PARTICLES HAS BEEN MADE, AND A GENERAL THEORY FOR THE COMBINING OF AGGREGATES OF VARYING SHAPES AND SIZES IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE MINIMUM POROSITY IS PROPOSED. THE THEORY AND RELEVANT DESIGN METHOD HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE OF GENERAL APPLICATION WHERE PARTICULATE AGGREGATES ARE USED, INCLUDING THOSE IN THE PRESENCE OF A BITUMINOUS BINDER. THE DESIGN METHOD RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF (A) VARIATION IN AGGREGATE SHAPE EITHER FROM THE "IDEAL" OF SOME SPECIFICATIONS OR FROM SIZE TO SIZE WITHIN THE RANGE EMPLOYED, (B) THE COMPACTIVE EFFORT (BOTH DURING LAYING AND DURING SUBSEQUENT TRAFFICKING), AND (C) THE THICKNESS OF SECTION TO BE LAID, AN INCLUDES CONSIDERATION OF THESE EFFECTS IN THE DESIGN PROCEDURE. /AUTHOR/
