FLOW IN AGGREGATE-BINDER MIXES
BITUMINOUS MIX DESIGN IS LARGELY A MATTER OF TRIAL AND ERROR AT PRESENT. UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT A KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICAL FACTORS OF BINDER AND AGGREGATE COULD LEAD TO A MORE SYSTEMATIC AND UNIFIED MIX DESIGN PROCEDURE, TESTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH CRUSHED LIMESTONE AND ROUNDED GRAVEL IN DIFFERENT SIZES AND FILM THICKNESSES. TEST RESULTS WERE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS AND GAVE PROMISE THAT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE USED TO PREDICT AND EXPLAIN AGGREGATE--BINDER BEHAVIOR. SPECIFIC CONCLUSIONS ABOUT MIX DESIGN ARE STATED.
